Christians For Herod!
It amused me—if that is the right word—to see putative Christians bend the knee to Obama. Many of them penned long self-serving screeds explaining how their support for him would not go against their Christian principles. The more audacious among them even proclaimed that it was a Christian act to support Obama.
There is much to be said—none of it good—about such folks. A man who raises his hands in pious “hosannas” and “hallelujahs” to the Lord Jesus Christ but then casts a vote for Obama is more than a little confused. The man has revealed where his true heart is. A Carpenter noted 2000 years ago that it profits a man not at all to trade his immortal soul for the entire world. But good Lord, for Obama?
Even the most pagan among us knows that Christianity claims certain things as objectively evil; that is, no Christian can compromise with them without himself becoming evil. That is Moral Theology 101, simple, to the point and easy to understand. The pagan might laugh at these claims of Christianity but he cannot deny that Christianity claims them.
And with absolutely no possibility of compromise Christianity proclaims abortion a great moral evil. It cannot proclaim otherwise and remain Christianity. Many of the once crowded denominations of Christianity have made their peace with the world and no longer say that abortion is evil all the time. They have thus ceased to be Christian.
I can hear the denunciations from where I sit. “How dare you say such a thing! How dare you claim to say what Christianity is!” I profess no such ability to “claim what Christianity is.” That task has already been done. It is well laid out in the Bible. If you disagree and call yourself a Christian, you might try out this prayer: “Dear Lord, I love You but I support abortion.” Good luck with that.
Those Christians who voted for the most pro-abortion politician on earth cannot use the excuse of ignorance. Obama’s position on abortion was completely clear all through the campaign. In fact, that was about the only clear thing about Obama. No, the Christian who voted for Obama did so knowing that his vote would doom children yet unborn to an early and barbarous death. He consciously and willingly sacrificed the life of many children so that he could get a swell deal on a mortgage, keep his retirement money and be thought cool for supporting such a hip fellow as Obama. Some deal.
And now, awash in a landslide of Christian support, our new lord has proclaimed that no unborn child anywhere upon the earth shall be safe from the abortionist’s knife. With one stroke of his mighty pen Obama reversed the Mexico City Policy dating back to Reagan, a policy “that forbids taxpayer monies from funding organizations that promote or perform abortions overseas.” Now part of every American’s income will go to the murder of foreign unborn. Now at long last foreigners will really like us.
If you think that Obama will now be sated, think again. He has some big plans for those babies who yet remain safe in their mothers’ wombs. Our High Priest of abortion is coming after them as well. It will be Obama’s own version of “no child left behind.” He will sign as soon as is convenient the Freedom of Choice Act. If you do not know that this is, you have not been listening.
The first thing I’d do as president is sign the Freedom of Choice Act. That’s the first thing that I’d do.” — Senator Barack Obama, speaking to the Planned Parenthood Action Fund, July 17, 2007
This bill would nullify and state or federal law that dared to place the slightest restriction upon abortion. It will make this nation truly a place where no child is safe from the ministrations of Obama. His lust for innocent blood would make Herod rabid with envy.
Imagine the obscene irony of all of this: Obama came to power with the support of Christians, men and women who were taught all about Herod the Great and his attempt to slaughter the Christ Child. Yet these same men and women voted for a creature who vows to slaughter millions of children, all of whom were conceived imago dei.
If I were not sitting in my own home, I would spit.
Update: Here is an example of a Christian justifying his support of Obama. His name is Douglas Kmiec. He claims that “Barack Obama is a natural for the Catholic vote.” His reasoning contains this whopper.
Beyond life issues, an audaciously hope-filled Democrat like Obama is a Catholic natural.
“Beyond life issues?” Such a statement is along the same lines as “Besides that, Mrs. Lincoln, how did you like the play?”
Throw out “life issues” and you throw out Christianity.
Through such men and by such reasoning does evil come to walk upon the earth.
